February 5, 2005 12:09 Majdan-INFORM Kyiv "Church Revolution" in UAOC
It is always a pity when faith in God separates people and makes them use force instead of uniting. It is not less sad when the democratic revolution that came true in the Ukrainian society is giving rise to local "revolutions" with the only aim to take over the power.
Yesterday, when the whole attention of Ukraine was drawn to Verkhovna Rada where the Government members were appointed, a large group of people headed by Valerij Kudryakov ("metropolitan Mefodij") occupied the premises of the UAOC Patriarchate in Kyiv. During the capturing, some Patriarchate members were killed, including a well-known writer, publicist, and law-defender Evgen Sverstjuk.
Taking into account the ambiguity, which is always present in church conflicts, Majdan withholds comments and proposes you the story of the eye-witness.
The UAOC Secretary made a declaration, in which he condemned the aggressors.
Because of the Patriarchate occupation on Trekhsvyatitelska street, 8, the divine service for the UAOC congregation will be for the first time held in the street. The public prayer starts at 10 o'clock. The UAOC bishops from other regions are expected to come.
